Crops, lambs and other news

At this point in time the farm has gained the positives from the recent floods on the property with excellent sub-soil moisture levels. The sheep have just about finished lambing and have moved back down to the river paddocks. It is amazing to watch them move to certain parts of the land at the same time each day. The big news for us is that one of the lambs has a mottled brown and white coat. This is a first.  Other fat lamb production activities include the completion of new fencing, gates and sheep yards.

Two paddocks have been planted with oats for direct grazing and one will be planted later with oats for harvesting and storage. This is to provide roughage and to balance the diet for the lambs' feeding on lucerne.  The burning off of the stubble of last year's cereal crops has been completed on the remaining paddocks and they should be planted within the next few weeks. Our planting is completed later than a lot of other farms in the area due to a slight variation in temperature on the river flats.  The planting this year will be a mix of canola and wheat. It would seem logical to plant all canola due to the current market, but that is what everyone is doing. What happens to prices by harvest time may still hold some surprises.
